ALEC - The Deadly Virus of Local Democracy

This read, this morning is pretty scary stuff.
Important to remember that North Carolina is under attack by ALEC legislators.
Important to remember what happens in one state - by ALEC legislators - soon spreads like a deadly virus to other states.
Important to remember that North Carolina is testing an ALEC model that destroys cities.

After you read the thole article - which I strongly suggest - would you like to see American be the "reborn south" - Plantation owners sitting on the front porch while the rest of us work for no wages, living in a windowless shanty with 12 people to a room - women being forced to reproduce to provide additional labor for the plantation owners - with no rights, no freedoms?  If your answer is no - you better get your butt off the couch and start working to save our democracy against these ALEC creeps - if you don't your kids & grandkids (regardless of what color they are)  will end up working in some fat cats factory for nothing but a shitty roof over your head.

There was a time when North Carolina was a symbol of Southern enlightenment. Compared to the policies of the old “Solid South” — Democratic, conservative, fervidly anti-civil rights

Just check the record of what’s occurred since Republicans for the first time since 1896 won in 2010 control of both houses of North Carolina’s Legislature.

They’ve passed a tax bill  benefitting higher-income taxpayers .

unemployment insurance will cut benefits

Aid to elementary education is dropping .

The NAACP and allied civil rights, labor and immigration groups have joined in, trying to combat what they call North Carolina’s new “mean-spirited” public policies.
The state’s sharp political shift is neither accidental nor short-lived. It reflects years of planning by Republican political operatives in close alliance with the American Legislative Exchange Council, the corporate-sponsored lobby that helps develop and circulate model laws reflecting not just corporate-friendly but ultra-conservative social agendas (like “stand your ground” gun laws).

By no accident, all the switched states are seeing strong pushes for voter-ID laws, restricted early voting and shortened polling hours — moves clearly designed to suppress the votes, and policy voice, of blacks, Hispanics and the poor.

North Carolina, Edsall suggests, has “become a tea party test tube” with its wave of measures bearing harsh consequences for blacks and other minorities.

The legislature ripped an area of recently annexed territory out of Goldsboro — even after the city had obligated itself for $7 million to build water and sewer lines to serve the new area.

Now the Republican legislators are out to seize city assets outright.

The legislation puts the airport under a regional authority — reasonable enough if the region had created and paid for the facility, which it hadn’t.

Another legislative target is Asheville’s water system.

Charlotte also is fighting in court, and the legal outcome is unclear.
Important to remember what happens in one state - by ALEC legislators - soon spreads like a deadly virus to other states.

After you read the thole article - which I strongly suggest -

ALEC - pernicious and immoral

If you are interested in all things legal when it comes to the Trayvon Martin case -
this
>>>>HERE<<<<
web blog entry is pretty intense with the Florida legal part of the story.

But the closing paragraph caught my attention and I couldn't agree with them more.

Again this returns us to Stand Your Ground Laws and the part played in their passage by ALEC. They even want to restrict what a doctor can tell his patients about gun violence. Their influence in our society is not productive. It is pernicious and immoral. They must not be allowed to continue to dictate the course of our nation's laws.
No - they must not.  We must stop the extremist pro-corporate right-wing American Legislative Exchange Council.

Join us to say
NO! to ALEC

ALEC Legislators & Their Fracking Corporate Benefactors

Awhile ago – I did a post that included a video with the President of Nestle stating:

Access to water is not your right
believing you have a right to water - is an extreme belief
Water is a raw material and a "foodstuff" that should be
                   privatized and commercialized.

Access to water - is really a local issue and us folks at the local level really need a lot of help from the Feds to protect our land, our water and our health.

Why the Feds?

Most state legislatures WON'T protect our land, our water and our health because in many states 1/3 or more of the state legislators belong to the extremist pro-corporate American legislative Exchange Council.

ALEC legislators want to protect the frackers and steal and privatize our water supply
- a win, win for ALEC corporate members.

The fact that our state legislatures may no longer serve/protect THE PEOPLE  becomes evident when you consider that ALEC wants to let the states legislate fracking regulations.  State regulations, written by corporations, brought home by ALEC legislators - legislators, whose only allegiance is to ALEC corporate fracking members and not to the people.

August 7 - 9 ALEC legislators will be going to Chicago - to again be wined and dined & indoctrinated by corporate lobbyists and their fracking corporate benefactors.

This will probably be the toast at the first breakfast meeting.

Aquafina - Pepsico
Poland Spring - Nestle
Dasani - Coke
Evian - Supposedly from France

Pepsico, Nestle, Coke - ALL ALEC members at one time.

The first week of August YOUR ALEC legislators are going to Chicago to pick up more fracking legislation from the corporate members of the extremist pro-corporate American Legislative Exchange Council.

The ALEC Book of Days - Week 3 - Exhiliration

This Weeks
Meditations for the ALEC Member

ANTICIPATION
to help you prepare for the American Legislative Exchange Council meeting in Chicago, August 7 - 9 at the Palmer hotel.

July 26
Lobbyists make the bad times good — and the good times unforgettable.

July 27
Everybody will be your lobbyist when you’re doing the right things.
Your  best lobbyists will stick with you and support you, even when you’re doing the wrong things.

July 28
It’s just something that happens as you grow up.
You realize it is less important to have more lobbyists and more important to have the really important ones.

July 29
Lobbyists are like bras: close to the heart and there for support.

July 30
If nothing else, I’ve realized who I can count on.
The lobbyists who can read my mind and finish my sentence.
The lobbyists who call me in the middle of a text message, or answer my question before I ask it.
The lobbyists who tell me what’s going on in my crazy head.

July 31
Good lobbyists are those who care without hesitation, remember without limitation, and love even without communication.

August 1
I've got the love of lobbyists
Down in my heart,
Where?
Down in my heart!
Where?
Down in my heart!

I've got the love of lobbyists
Down in my heart,
Where?
Down in my heart to stay.

Please meditate every day
your own identity will vanish and
the only experience left
will be that of blissful lobbyist surrender.

GOP POTUS' - Let ALEC in White House

Well - here's a little history on ALEC and the White House.
Expecially important to consider - cause not only does ALEC then have access to the POTUS - but they also have access (with the POTUS' blessing)  to the staff in ALL the different federal agencies - which begs the question
"How many people who work in the Federal Government are ALECers"

Think about it after you have read this entry.

THE REAGAN YEARS
The following are excerpts from the ALEC's 25th Annual Meeting Commemorative Program (1998) where they state:
So well received were the policies which ALEC proffered in the late 1970s, that eleven days after his inauguration, President Ronald Reagan invited a bipartisan delegation of 35 ALEC members to meet with him at the White House to help set the agenda for his New Federalism initiatives .
So then the question begs to be asked - was that a one time meeting?
During briefings in May and December of 1981, hundreds of ALEC legislators discussed policy changes directly with the President.
No.

Did it stop with just those two months of "discussions ... directly with the President"?
As a result of the interaction that ALEC members had with Reagan Administration officials, ALEC established seven Cabinet Task Forces to work directly with the administration
But that didn't mean they had a close relationship - correct?
 (my italics)
Finally, in 1986, it was decided that - as a result of the constant interaction with the Reagan Administration, the successes of policies it proposed, and the generally high regard with which its ideas were met - ALEC should form formal internal Task Forces to develop policy covering virtually every aspect of government
And surely that was the end of it - correct?
...  hundreds of ALEC legislators discussed policy changes directly with the President [Reagan] and his top policy advisors-a practice that would continue throughout the twelve years of the Reagan and Bush presidencies.
Yep - twelve years, 1981 - 1993.

That explains why ALEC gave their "prestigious" "Thomas Jefferson Freedom Award"
to Reagan in 1990 and
to President George H. Bush in 1993.

And then, of course - you have
THE BUSH YEARS

BUSH ONE
George HW loved ALEC
Addressed them in
1989
1990
1991
and twice in 1992
President Bush is welcomed by ALEC members at the opening session of the 1992 Annual Meeting in Colorado Springs. Joining the President at the head table were Ambassador Holly Coorst Senator Ray Powers (CO), Mr. Allen Auger of Coors Brewing Company, Incoming National Chairman Senator William J. Raggio (NV), ALEC Executive Director Samuel A. Bruneffi, …  Major speakers included: President George Bush; Secretary of the Interior Manuel Lujan; Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander; Secretary of Transportation Andrew Card; Secretary of Health and Human Service Louis Sullivan; Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Jack Kemp, Deputy Attorney General George Terwilleger
Yep - twelve years, 1981 - 1993.

Thank god Clinton was in office from 1993 - January, 2001.

But once Reagan and George 41 were out of office,
 it stopped there, didn't it?

Well maybe, depending how you define the concept of "constant interaction" and remember, by then ALEC was getting a little more guarded about their operations.

BUSH TWO
But then I think it probably started up all over again.
The 2001 [States and Nation Policy] Summit began with a White House briefing from President George Bush and some of his top aides, including Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge (a former Pennsylvania governor),White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card and White House Intergovernmental Affairs Director Ruben Barrales. President Bush briefed ALEC members on the need for more coordination between federal, state and local governments in the fight against terrorism. (ALEC 2001 Annual Report)
And then there's this...
The 2002 [States and Nation Policy] Summit attracted more than 300 state legislators from 43 states.
One of the key highlights of the meeting was a briefing by President George W. Bush on homeland security and the situation in Iraq. During the briefing at the White House, U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige and Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge joined President Bush in offering remarks. (ALEC 2002 Annual Report)
And this from the annual meeting in 2003
Vice President Richard B. Cheney

Thank you very much. I appreciate that warm welcome, and I’m especially honored to be this year’s award winner of the Thomas Jefferson Freedom Award. It means a great deal. I’ve got enormous respect for ALEC and for what the organization stands for.

I see many friends from across America out there tonight, and it’s good to bring you greetings from President George W. Bush. He sends you his very best.   ...   President Bush and I appreciate the good work you do, and we value your advice, and we appreciate your support.
It was pretty easy to see why Reagan got the Jefferson
- but I wonder why Cheney got the award?
Maybe "W" couldn't pronounce Jeffersonian or  federalism  - there's probably a wide array of options for "why not W" I guess.

2004 was an election year - so I don't think ALEC was on the agenda for anyone at the White House.

And then there is this
President George W. Bush Addresses ALEC's 32nd Annual Meeting
(2005 Annual Meeting in Grapevine, Texas)
…  while promoting an aggressive domestic agenda that includes changes to Social Security, immigration and the tax code. "I hope Congress gets a good rest because they got a lot of work to do when they get back," Mr. Bush told the members of the American Legislative Exchange Council convened for their 32nd Annual Meeting.</blockquote>
2006  ... George W - sent a video message to the annual meeting.

And then
Among the many highlights of ALEC’s 34th Annual Meeting (2007) in Philadelphia this summer was a surprise visit by President George W. Bush. The president was warmly welcomed by ALEC members Thursday morning, who reserved their loudest applause for his promise to veto any tax increase Congress sends him.  (Inside ALEC 2007 - George W was the cover shot)
And that would be an additional 8 years of linkage to the White House.

Besides the shock and awe some of you may be feeling - there is a moral to this story.
Voting has consequences
and one of the consequences
of a Republican president
is ALEC in the White House.

HEY - ALEC - That doesn't look very bi-partisan to me.
