ATLANTA (AP) — All baby boomers should get a one-time blood test to learn if they have the liver-destroying hepatitis C virus, U.S. health officials said Thursday.

Another reason: Two drugs hit the market last year that promise to cure many more people than was previously possible.

The CDC call for testing is "a bold and important move," Muir said in a statement.

Ever notice how the Republicans never want to dismantle the DCD (Center for Desease Control)?

Well why should they when notices like this  … 

Send more people needlessly to the doctor/hospital for testing.  Large health organizations that donate to the Republicans.

Put more people on drug therapies from the pharmaceutical companies that donate large sums of money to the Republicans and the corporate profit secotr members of the American Legislative Exchange Council.

  By JONATHAN D. ROCKOFF Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. suffered a serious setback in its multibillion-dollar efforts to find new treatments for a deadly liver disease, suspending testing of a pill for hepatitis C after a patient's heart failed.

Another crack appeared today in the ultra-hype of next generation Hep C drugs. Idenix Pharmaceuticals (IDIX) released news that its Phase IIb trial with IDX184 was put on partial clinical hold by the FDA due to the recent cardiovascular toxicity experienced by a patient treated with a similar treatment developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY). Idenix's investors were quick to pull the trigger, sending the stock for a 40% nosedive.

And while the Centers for Disease Control estimates that chronic disease accounts for about 75% of health spending, in government-run healthcare programs it consumes even more—96 cents per dollar for Medicare and 83 cents per dollar for Medicaid. With stakes this high, it is imperative that policymakers raise awareness about the fiscal and health effects of chronic disease; that the private sector establish voluntary, market-friendly wellness programs for health care consumers; and that individuals assume personal responsibility for their own health in order to stop chronic diseases before they start.
