From The Hill
On entitlements, Obama is offering to change the way
inflation is calculated in benefit programs, including in Social Security, a
move opposed by many liberals. The new method, known as chained consumer price
index (CPI), would cut $130 billion more in spending. A source said that
provisions are included to protect the most vulnerable.
In particular, the organization doesn't want
congressional negotiators to use an alternate measure of inflation for
calculating Social Security's cost of living adjustments, known as COLAs. The
alternative measure, called the chained Consumer Price Index, would reduce the
amount of COLAs over time. In October, the Social Security Administration
announced a 1.7 percent increase in Social Security benefits -- which average
$1,235 per month for seniors.
"If Congress had already adopted CCPI, the 2013 COLA
would be even less, at only 1.4 percent," Rand wrote (click HERE for a PDF
of the letter). "However, adopting a chained consumer price index to
calculate Social Security COLAs is not a small benefit change -- it will
compound benefit reductions dramatically over time, resulting in an annual
benefit that is roughly $1,000 (2012 dollars) lower by the time a beneficiary
reaches age 85."
$1,000 – eh?
So as the cost of goods goes up and up and up and up –
benefits will go down and down and down.
Other seniors are talking a catfood future - I'm just thinking , no future.
Well I just got thrown under the bus so the 1% can have
more.
The Dow went up this morning - cause of this deal ---- evidence that the rich will get richer.

Seventy-five percent of Americans
nearing retirement age in 2010 had less
than $30,000 in their retirement accounts. The specter of downward mobility
in retirement is a looming reality for both middle- and higher-income workers.
Almost half of middle-class workers, 49 percent, will be poor or near poor in
retirement, living on a food budget of about $5 a day.
But dying early is not the basis
of a retirement plan.
If we manage to accept that our
investments will likely not be enough, we usually enter another fantasy world —
that of working longer.
I refuse to work longer.
Dying early – for some seniors is becoming a scenario on
which they must build their retirement plans.
I, personally, am planning on living until I am 82, not a
day more. No more needs to be said about
that and I am not the only senior who thinks that way (I’ve done the research)
Someone please remind me, right now, why I voted for
Obama – why I supported him on the pages of this blog.
A Brad DeLong put it,“’Chained-CPI’ is code for ‘let's really impoverish some women in their 90s!’”
This change would end up reducing benefits by about .3 percent each year and
will hammer elderly women. The National Women’s Law Center calculates that the
typical single elderly woman would see her monthly benefits reduced by $56 at
age 80. It reports that this is “an
amount equal to the cost of one week’s worth of food each month.”
It should come as no surprise,
then, that Social Security represents virtually the only source of income for
nearly 40 percent of women over 80, compared to just 28 percent of men. If
these women see their monthly checks slashed, where do they turn when they
can’t afford food at the end of the month?
I guess me and other seniors like me just got screwed by
the politics again.
Young Dems – you’re are definitely in trouble if you
think seniors will fall for the Democrats lies again. If you love your party - you better start getting other younger voters engaged, now for 2014 and 2016.
You will see more and more seniors voting
third party – regardless of what it will do to the Dems. Many will rather vote third party, to build a strong third party movement for future generations,
than support Dems who are really Republicans. Dems who have forgotten what the Democratic Party is suppose to represent - and I for one, am sick and tired of listening to their excuses. I'm tired of trying to prop up a party that doesn't stand behind the very values that it was founded on. I'm sick and tired.
Screw me once, shame on you.
Screw me twice shame on me.
And everywhere I look – I’m getting screwed.
Everywhere.

Boehner rejects Obama offer to extend some Bush tax cuts
for wealthy while cutting Social Security
But I’m not hopeful
Why
Cause these paragraph tells the truth, the whole truth
and nothing but the truth
Ah yes, the
old "step in the right direction" statement.
In other words, it's time to move
the goal posts. They've got President Obama where they want him—at the
negotiating table. They weren't so happy when he was applying public pressure
on them to extend middle-class tax cuts with no strings attached. But now that
he's willing to deal behind closed doors, they've got to be thrilled. And as
long as they believe President Obama is desperate for a deal, they'll hold out
until they get every concession they can possibly get.
And now everyone - except the 1% - can get screwed AGAIN!
Same story - different year.
President negotiates - gives the Republicans what they want.
