When will the ALEC/NRA Lying Start Again?

Think about this!

Turning the other cheek is supposed to be a sacred virtue. But by removing the duty to retreat from a confrontation in public when one can safely do so, the “Stand Your Ground” law allowed George Zimmerman to stalk and kill an unarmed teenager and walk away a free man. That’s a tragedy, because there can be no doubt that Zimmerman could have avoided a confrontation with Trayvon Martin on the evening of February 26, 2012.

Think about this!

   Zimmerman:

   Yeah. [2:25]

   911 dispatcher:

   OK.

    MORIAL: It’s important to recognize a year ago when there was some sunlight on ALEC, many of us called for many of its major supporters to withdraw. I want to renew that call this morning, because the poison of the stand your ground law was from ALEC. They went to the state — I’m a former state legislator — and have watched them operate. There needs to be sunlight on what they’re doing, which what they’re doing is creating model legislation and spread the poison of stand your ground all over the nation. Those who support ALEC should withdraw from ALEC because this kind of thing and the use of stand your ground is why at the very instance the law enforcement there in Sanford, Florida, did not arrest George Zimmerman as they should have, at the very inception.

And editorial by Executive Director Ron Scheberle included the following misleading statements (my emphasis):

I wish that our critics would conduct themselves similarly. Instead, liberal activist groups like Color of Change have used this tragedy to falsely accuse ALEC of collaborating with the National Rifle Association on model legislation. The truth is that ALEC has no affiliation with the NRA, which is not a member of ALEC.

ALEC is a partnership between state legislators, members of the nonprofit and private sectors, and the general public that works to support the fundamental principles of free-market enterprise, limited government and federalism at the state level. ALEC does not have any model legislation involving the NRA.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Ron - really - when you lie down with dogs like the NRA for over two decades - you're going to get fleas.

In the wake of this mass shooting and similar tragedies around the country, our members remain committed to changing a systemic culture of gun violence and promoting sensible reforms to gun laws that, if implemented, can improve public safety in our communities.

"Because of these core principles, ColorOfChange will continue holding corporations accountable for their continued support of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and the National Rifle Association (NRA), the chief opponents of commonsense laws. Corporations that continue to stand with ALEC and the NRA, like Duke Energy, State Farm, AT&T, and eBay, play a role in blocking sensible reforms that could address and prevent gun violence.

"ALEC and the NRA create and push laws that make it easy for people to get high-powered assault weapons like the ones used in Newtown and so many of the tragic mass shootings that have plagued our nation. The NRA still plays a key role in crafting ALEC's model gun-access legislation and these laws destroy families and erode public safety, putting us all in harm’s way. More than 40 corporations have already left ALEC, and now is the time for more companies to end their ties with ALEC and the NRA.

"Now more than ever, it is imperative that corporations that support ALEC and the NRA cut these ties and become part of solutions that can stem the violence.”

Don't see anything wrong there - asking corporations to cut ties with ALEC 'cause of gun legislation nastiness - especially when you consider that ALEC HAS created and pushed these pieces of ALEC "model legislation":

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the American Legislative Exchange Council recommends the rejection, by federal, state, and local governing bodies, of further restrictions on law-abiding American citizens in the form of “waiting periods” of any length; and

AND THIS

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the American Legislative Exchange Council recommends the rejection of current proposals at the local, state, and federal levels that arbitrarily restrict the possession of the semi-automatic class of firearms by law-abiding American citizens; and

AND THIS

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the American Legislative Exchange Council recommends the rejection of further restrictive firearms laws that only serve to limit law-abiding citizens in the exercise of their Constitutionally guaranteed rights while having no effect on the activities of the criminal element in our society;

I don't think ALEC members UnitedHealthcare, UPS, AT&T,  Diageo, Pfizer, AOL, or Comcast asked for that legislation.

And when you think about the bolded parts of his statement (which were my emphasis) - there is a real disconnect with reality there.

NRA Reportedly Seething Over Elimination Of ALEC Task Force

Erickson reported:

At Grover Norquist's Wednesday meeting a discussion about the ongoing assault against ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council, came up. Multiple sources (there are hundreds in the room) tell me that the NRA representative took issue with ALEC getting rid of his public safety section. That section has drafted a model "stand your ground" law, which Florida passed.

The NRA representative claimed that if ALEC was going to run away from the fight on these public safety issues, ALEC might just run away from other issues too, e.g. immigration.

Erickson further reported that an ALEC representative present at the meeting complained that the NRA had refused to help his organization push back on attacks they were receiving.

The NRA was a "Vice-Chairman" level sponsor of 2011 American Legislative Exchange Council Annual Conference, which in 2010, equated to $25,000.[8]

ALEC Brief Defends Second Amendment

In a few short weeks, the Supreme Court will deliver a decision that will have a great impact on all Americans’ Second Amendment rights. If the Court’s decision is favorable, American gun owners will be on the verge of a major step forward—due in large part to the support of organizations like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and its members.

At ALEC's annual meeting this summer [2012], the NRA had the biggest booth at the convention in Salt Lake City and also underwrote a shooting event along with one of the largest sellers of assault weapons in the world.
