ALEC Profit Sector Ntl Chair - Owns Lobbying Firm

Bill Moyers 30 minute expose' on the American Legislative Exchange Council is not the end - it is just a piece of the process, a very scenic view along the road.

We need to stay vigilant and keep telling the ALEC story.

This entry's topic came up while I was watching Moyers report.
If you haven't seen it - watch it >>>HERE<<<

This is a little ditty about the National Chariman of the ALEC Private Sector Board.

National Chairman
Mr. W. Preston Baldwin
Centerpoint360
Centerpoint360 is a lobbying firm based in Greenwich, CT.

NOTE THIS ONE
HE IS THE NATIONAL CHAIRMAN

From his LinkedIn page
W. Preston Baldwin is president and chief executive officer of Centerpoint360, a national public affairs and government relations strategy and consulting firm.

Centerpoint360 represents and advises corporations and not-for-profit organizations on strategies to enhance their overall management, branding and positioning within the external legislative and regulatory environment. Centerpoint360 represents a diverse portfolio of clients with over $500B  in annual sales.
“enhance their overall  ..  positioning”
“within the external legislation and regulatory environment”

Fancy words for LOBBYING
Registered lobbyist in the state of Virginia – 2009

Registered lobbyist “Client Contact” for UST – State of Indiana – 2009

Registered Primary Employer for UST Lobbying – State of Rhode Island - 2009

Registered lobbyist “Client Contact” for UST – State of Maine – 2009

Registered “Employer Representative” State of Ohio – 2008

Registered lobbyist in state of Tennessee – 2007

Registered lobbyist Primary Employer for UST – State of Alaska – 2007

Getting bored – think I proved my point!

Evidently – his investment in ALEC has had a huge return.
Centerpoint360 represents a diverse portfolio of clients with over $500B  in annual sales.

I would say that ALEC is a good investment.
Nowhere else can you get a return that high.

Mitt-Wit's Co-Chair on Bin Laden

From Think Progress Today:
Mitt Romney campaign co-chair and former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu accused President Obama of waiting too long to order the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, in an interview with the New York Times that was published on Saturday.

Sununu said that Obama was “timid,” could have gone after the terrorist mastermind sooner, and attributed the successful operation to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton:

The president is trying to take credit for following the strategy and the tactics put into place by George W. Bush

You mean this George W Bush????
Bush scolded those who cared about Bin Laden for not “understand[ing] the scope of the mission” because Bin Laden was just “one person,” whom Bush said, “I really just don’t spend that much time on“:

Who knows if he’s hiding in some cave or not. We haven’t heard from him in a long time. The idea of focusing on one person really indicates to me people don’t understand the scope of the mission. Terror is bigger than one person. He’s just a person who’s been marginalized. … I don’t know where he is. I really just don’t spend that much time on him, to be honest with you.
Who said that SIX months after 9/11
THAT George Bush?????
REALLY????

I Don't Know where he is  ...

OR
THIS Obama???????

ALEC Voter ID - Why Did the US Senate Do Nothing?

This morning I saw John Fund on a CSPAN video hawking his latest book on Voter ID.

Since Fund is good buddies of ALEC I did a search of him and his co-author and found this where his co-author, von Spakovsky, (who is also a good buddy of ALEC) is addressing the SENATE about Voter ID a YEAR AGO!!!

[From the U.S. Government Printing Office]
S. Hrg. 112-160
SEPTEMBER 8, 2011

Chairman Durbin. So let us follow the money in this debate
for a moment. Let us see who is pushing for these changes in
the law and where the money is coming from and see if it gives
us any kind of an indication of a political motive behind this.
Are you familiar with a group known as the American
Legislative Exchange Council?
Now here comes the standard ALEC LIE
Mr. von Spakovsky. Certainly, Senator. It is the equivalent
of the National Conference of State Legislators. It is a
similar trade organization for State legislators.
A similar trade organization – eh????
Really????
I don’t think that is how NCSL would describe themselves
BUT the American Legislative Exchange Council – does appear to be a “trade” organization”.
Chairman Durbin. And one of the founders, Paul Weyrich, are
you familiar with this man?
Mr. von Spakovsky. Certainly. He helped start the Heritage
Foundation, too.
Yes, he did.  And he coined the phrase “moral majority”.
Chairman Durbin. And one of the preeminent conservative
political spokesmen in America who said in a moment of candor,
``I do not want everybody to vote. As a matter of fact, our
leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting
populace goes down.'' This quote comes from Paul Weyrich, one
of the founders of the American Legislative Exchange Council.
Hallelujah! For Chairman Durbin – it is evident that he is keeping himself educated!
Then you take a look at where the money is coming from for
this council to undertake these legislative efforts all across
the United States, and you find a couple of brothers: David and
Charles Koch, billionaire conservative financiers who have
spent substantial sums of money, even before Citizens United,
to promote a pretty conservative political agenda.
Hallelujah! For Chairman Durbin – it is evident that he is keeping himself educated!
Now take a look at the people most affected by these new
laws. You have heard it said over and over again. I think you
have said it in your testimony. I will just tell you as a
sophomore student of political science, I would bet the people
we are talking about are more likely than not to vote on the
Democratic side. Not all of them by any means, but more likely
than not. So is this a great leap to put these two things
together, that these two financiers through this council
spending millions of dollars promoting changes in State law
that will restrict the outcome of elections when it comes to
Democratic voters?
Hmmmmm.
But then you have this response from Von Spakovsky.
A response which is a new one for me – and he doesn’t get it right – ti was evident he was fishing for something – anything to say.
Mr. von Spakovsky. Senator, you can do that with any
subject in America. In fact, there is a famous Hollywood thing.
I am seven stages removed from--which actor is it?
    Senator Franken. It is----
    [Laughter.]
Senator Franken.--Kevin Bacon. It is not seven. It is six.
    [Laughter.]
Mr. von Spakovsky. Six. Very good.
I do not believe that the Democrats in Rhode Island who
control the State I think four to one in the State legislature
would agree with that. They are the ones who thought this bill
was necessary. I read you some of the quotes from the
legislators who were in favor of this. And the same thing----
    Chairman Durbin. But take----
Don’t interrupt me here – I’m on a roll, I think
Mr. von Spakovsky. The same thing happened in Kansas.
    Chairman Durbin. Do you----
Don’t interrupt me here – I’m on a roll, I think
Mr. von Spakovsky. Democratic legislators also voted to
approve this voter ID legislation.
Chairman Durbin. Do you dispute my premise that the
American Legislative Exchange Council has played an active role
in the promulgation of the State laws that we are discussing
here today?
Mr. von Spakovsky. Senator, they have a lot of model bills
that they recommend to their State legislators.
Chairman Durbin. I will take that as a yes.
Oh yeh – that is a definite yes.
Mr. von Spakovsky. Yes, and those are--those are approved
by votes of their State legislators at their Committee
meetings.
Oh yeh – that is a definite yes.
And by the Corporate members who would on the safety and elections task force – which included the Kochs, RJR, Taser Institute, Wine Institute, and the Coors.
Chairman Durbin. And do you also concede the fact that the
Koch brothers are major financiers of conservative causes,
including this council?
Oh yeh – that is a definite yes.
And a definite YES when it comes to the Voter ID ALEC “model legislation”.
Mr. von Spakovsky. I have no idea, Senator. I do not keep
track of major contributors to organizations like that.
    Chairman Durbin. We do.
Maybe – but not much!!!!

And I have to admit.
This exchange happened in September 2011.
WHY – could someone please tell me WHY – is this still an issue in 2012???
This is one of those times when talking did little except provide fodder for my blog.

What’s really embarrassing to me is both the Senators from Minnesota were in this meeting and neither of them did ANYTHING during the past year about this issue.

WHY DIDN’T THE SENATE DO SOMETHING??
WHY?????

Big Pharma - Still Waiting for Their ALEC Return On Investment

"I would say ALEC is a good investment.
Nowhere else can you get a return that high."

Found this on Common Dreams – an excellent example that an ALEC membership – is a great investment - with a high return.
(my emphasis)
Major pharmaceutical companies undeterred as profits continue to rise

The charges against major pharmaceutical companies accused of defrauding their Medicaid programs, include overcharging health programs, largely in the form of drug pricing fraud, as well as unlawful promotion of 'off-label' drugs (promoting drugs for unapproved uses).

2012 has already broken the record for financial penalties and court settlements against the pharmaceutical industry, with $6.6 billion recovered by mid-July.

The big pharma corporations associated with the largest penalties include GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson and Abbott. These companies were responsible for two-thirds of the financial penalties paid out to the federal and state governments over the course of the study period. GlaxoSmithKline topped the list with $3.1 billion in settlements.

De-Regulation – An ALEC goal.
Destroying Consumer Rights – An ALEC goal.
BOTH increase profits for pharma - while endangering the US population.

GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson and Abbott.
ALL ALEC members

Just think how much more money they can make and how many lives they can destroy – using their membership with ALEC.

ALL of them want to add MORE PROFIT to their bottom line – by using nasty legislation, written by them and the other ALEC profit sector members and then distributed by the American Legislative Exchange Council, on their greedy behalf.

Franson - Hating is a Lifestyle Choice

Here in Minnesota – the right wingers put a marriage amendment on our ballot for November.

Every time I think about it - I think of the ad I hear on a daily basis that ends:
Hating gays is a lifestyle choice.

One of Minnesota’s famous right wing nut jobs was at it again.  Glad it made the front page of Think Progress – otherwise I would have missed it.

Minnesota incumbent State Rep. Mary Franson (R) defended her support for a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman during a debate last week, arguing that the measure would protect the state’s children from abnormal behavior. Franson said:

My concerns are that our children in our schools could be taught some liberal agendas because of the marriage amendment. Because in the schools they may be taught that, this is normal behavior. I personally do not believe it is…that’s something that I wish to protect our children from.
My concern is that idiots like this are in our state legislature.
Liberal agendas in the schools – something that ALEC whines about all the time at the post-secondary level.  They must be moving that mantra to cover all education now.

My concern is that the people in her district are in-bred, that’s the only reason that would explain them electing her to the legislature.  She is a crazy right-wing nut job, she is NOT legislative material – she is an embarrassment to the whole state of Minnesota.

Mary Franson is the right wing nutball that also referred to people who receive welfare and food stamps as “animals”

I kinda guess that Ms. Franson
– kinda hates everyone
– everyone except the people who fund her campaign.

I am convinced Franson is ALEC – we just haven’t proved it beyond a reasonable doubt yet – but all the warning signs are there (including ALEC-like travel reported on her campaign reports).
PLEASE do not re-elect her.

Free-Market Healtth Care LIES!

Author
Physician Philip Caper of Brooklin is a founding board member of Maine AllCare, a nonpartisan, nonprofit group committed to making health care in Maine universal, accessible and affordable for all, and a member of Physicians for a National Health Program.

SNIPS from a Common Dreams Article by Caper (my emphasis)
When it comes to competition and health care, let the buyer beware.

Americans have the most market-driven health care system in the world.
We are now seeing the results.
We have the world’s highest health care costs,
the highest rates of un- and underinsurance,
some of the poorest health outcomes, and
an almost universal belief that our health care system is badly broken.

Excellent article –

That’s what free-market thinking gets you.
This is the damage that free-market thinking has done to US.
This is what ALEC legislators HIDE from you with their “free-market” LIES.

Give Charter Schools an "F"

C. Charter Schools? They Flunk.

Milton Friedman's 1955 article, "The Role of Government in Education," argued for a voucher system that would allow parents to purchase the school of their choice for their children. Just as Friedman's supply-side free-market beliefs have been proven wrong, so also the notion of privatizing education is doomed to failure.
Read this on Common Dreams and thought of ALEC

Also thought of that nasty new ALEC movie that is out promoting the parent-trigger (it can’t be linked to ALEC directly , but I’m sure the screenplay writers didn’t come up with that storyline by themselves).

The article on Common Dreams goes on to say:

The evidence against charter schools is overwhelming. Their relative ineffectiveness is documented by studies from Stanford University, the Department of Education, Johns Hopkins University, and the RAND Corporation.

In addition to their poor performance, charters are more segregated, less likely to accept students with disabilities, and conducive to a widening of the racial and rich-poor education gaps.

Also, charter school teachers have less experience, and their turnover rate is higher.

This article on charter schools is very well worth your time with lots of informative links that will save you lots of time if you write about school issues – particularly charter schools.

My Money is Now Speech (Kinda)

Ran into something interesting tonight on Common Dreams.

Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, talks to “Viewpoint” host Eliot Spitzer about the need to get money out of politics. As “head stamper” for the StampStampede Campaign, Cohen shows Spitzer how he’s been stamping dollar bills with pro–campaign finance reform messages, something he hopes to inspire others to do.

There he was on Current TV stamping slogans on the backs of dollar bills.

So I went to the StampStampede webpage and did some looking around on the webpage at the statistics which are pretty amazing.

Then I went looking for an answer and found it in the comments section of a post on  “DU”

Answer: There is no law or statute against simply writing on a cash bill. For instance, it is not against the law to draw giant red lips on George Washington's portrait on the front of a One Dollar Bill.

However defacing currency with the intent to alter the bill to gain a benefit is illegal. If someone alters a written instrument (such as a check) without permission and with the intent to gain a benefit, then it is called forgery, which is a crime. If one tried to alter a cash bill (like changing a $5 bill to a $20 bill) for the purpose of presenting the altered bill to gain a benefit, then that could be considered a forgery. Forgery of United States Currency in this manner is called counterfeiting and carries with it very stiff penalties.

Then I went to my billfold – pulled out all my currency and on the back side of it wrote:
Money is NOT speech.  Corporations are NOT people.

Feel like I’ve done my good deed for the day.
Will probably piss off a few right-wingers along the way when these bills hit their pockets – but then they will spend them faster and keep the economy going.

Defending ALEC - The Wrong Thing to Do

It amazes me
that with all the bad publicity that ALEC is getting - they are doing nothing!
Why are they doing nothing?  Because there is no way in hell any person could justify what the American Legislative Exchange Council has been doing for almost 40 years to the AMerican democracy.

So --------
ALEC's good buddies are stepping to the forefront trying to help out their freind.  While other rats are jumping dfrom the ALEC sinking ship - some of their buddies are congratulating those companies who are refusing to #DumpALEC.

The right thing to do - is to dump ALEC.
The wrong thing to do is in the clip below.

Free-Market Activist Group to FedEx Executives: Stand Firm Against Radical Demands

Who would expect that a "free-market" activist group would step up to the plate to defend and ALEC profit sector member - who woulda thunk????

Shareholder Warning FedEx that Corporate Capitulation to Race-Baiting Pressure Groups Leads to More Problems for Business, More Pressure From Left
They forget to mention that the “shareholder” is also an ALEC-er
They forget to mention ( until later in the “press release”) that this shareholder took over the nastiness of Voter ID to help take the pressure off of ALEC last April.

Memphis, TN / Washington, D.C. - At today's annual meeting of FedEx shareholders in Memphis, Tennessee, National Center for Public Policy Research executive director David W. Almasi will congratulate FedEx CEO Frederick Smith for not caving to the demands of the organized left to drop their support of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). Almasi also seeks to warn the shipping giant about problems that would arise from a capitulation to the radical activist groups.
YEP – National Center for Public Policy Research the company that bragged that they took over the ALEC Voter ID push.  When ALEC was throwing Voter ID in the gutter – their buddie NCPPR was there to take over the reins and keep ALEC’s nasty Voter D work going forward.  We are there for you brother!!!!

"There is no reason for FedEx or any other company to sever ties with ALEC just because the radical left demands it," said Almasi. "ALEC is helping to make government more business-friendly. This benefits FedEx employees, shareholders, customers and anyone doing business with the company.
ALEC is helping to make government more business-friendly.
Yes they are VERY friendly.
FedEx Research can write legislation and bring it to ALEC meetings and give it to ALEC legislators to introduce at the state and federal level.
NOT legislation that the public wants – legislation that the ALEC corporate profit sector member want passed and their nonprofit ALEC members vote YES!!!! We want that legislation too – cause these ALEC profit sector members make donations to us too.

There are NO benefits for the employees, the shareholders or the customers – as ALEC legislation helps the ALEC profit sector member and no on else.

FedEx is a supporter of ALEC, particularly the group's Commerce, Insurance and Economic Development Task Force. This task force "develops policies that enhance competitiveness, promote employment and economic prosperity, encourage innovation, and limit government regulation imposed upon business."
Oh – yes they are.
Just think of the commerce and economic legislation that ALEC has introduced that helps FedEx make more money and destroys the rights of consumers when dealing with ALEC profit sector members like FedEx.  Increase revenues for ALEC profit sector member – any way we can  – screw the public/customer – that’s the ALEC pro-corporate logo.

Leftist radicals seek to choke off ALEC's corporate donations by trying to link companies to ALEC's past work on state-level voter ID ballot protection and "stand your ground" legislation -- claiming such laws are racist and threatening to launch minority boycotts of the businesses. Even though ALEC ceased working on both issues in April of 2012, radical groups such as Color of Change continue to falsely and deceitfully campaign against ALEC on these issues.
Blame it on those horrible leftists.  The groups and people who have stepped forward to expose the nastiness of ALEC.
Face it - ALEC did it! – with malice and yet wyou ALEC-ers expect the US to fogetaboutit?
Not a chance!

Even though ALEC stopped working on the issue, the National Center for Public Policy Research continues ALEC's work in supporting commonsense polling place protections with its own Voter ID Task Force.
Oh my – something to be really proud about.

The National Center For Public Policy Research is a conservative, free-market, non-profit think-tank established in 1982. It is supported by the voluntary gifts of over 100,000 individual recent supporters, receiving approximately one percent of its revenue from corporate sources. Contributions to it are tax-deductible
Contributions to it are tax-deductible
I’m sure they are and I’m sure that FedEx will be making a huge contribution to the National Center for Public Policy Research – right after they send in their about $50,000 tax-deductible donation to ALEC.

And the sad thing about this - the really sad thing, is that FedEx shareholders are probably so ignorant when it comes to the nastiness of the American Legislative Exchange Council - that the shareholders probalby think this is a good thing.  So sad!!!!!

My only hope is that
YOU are NOT using FedEx.
My hope is that you are using the USPS to send your stuff.

Moyers to Expose ALEC - Right Wing Whines!!!!

Yes sirree !   ALEC is going to be on TV.

Bill Moyers will be doing a special this week on ALEC and introducing the United States to the nastiness known as ALEC.

Next Week's Bill Moyer's & Company will feature ALEC.
A documentary named
The United States of ALEC

Yes, sirree!!!! ALEC is going to be on TV
AND the right wing is shitting nickels.

They have already started the media spin trying to save ALEC’s butt.
But – now – the entire United States is going to know about the nastiness known as the ALEC.

Now is the time to check you local listings and have an ALEC party.  Bring lots of booze – you will need it!!!

Anyway – now to the right wing shitting nickels.

The Media Research Center is already trying to bash Moyers for his documentary.

A Little Bit about MRC.

The Media Research Center (MRC) is a conservative content analysis organization based in Alexandria, Virginia, founded in 1987 by conservative activist L. Brent Bozell III. Its stated mission is to "prove — through sound scientific research — that liberal bias in the media does exist and undermines traditional American values" and to "neutralize [that bias's] impact on the American political scene".

Media Research Center has received $412,500 from ExxonMobil since 1998.

Koch Industries Climate Denial Front Group
Media Research Center (MRC)

March 31, 2010 $14,030 received from Koch foundations 2005-2010 [Total Koch foundation grants 1997-2010: $15,005]

The Media Research Center has also contributed to the "ClimateGate" echo chamber, criticizing national media outlets for a lack of "ClimateGate" coverage.

And then SourceWatch has these little bits of something, something about MRC.
(MRC) is a conservative media watchdog group run by president and founder Brent Bozell. In 2006 the MRC had total revenue of $10.8 million[1] and 50 full-time staff members. It is predominately funded by larger right-wing foundations (see below) with other comparatively minor sources of income from rental income and investments. In it's 2006 annual report, the group's founder wrote that MRC "continued to regularly provide intellectual ammunition to conservative activists, arming them with the weapons to fight the leftist press."[2]

“The mission of the Media Research Center is to bring balance and responsibility to the news media. Leaders of America's conservative movement have long believed that within the national news media a strident liberal bias existed that influenced the public's understanding of critical issues. On October 1, 1987, a group of young determined conservatives set out to not only prove - through sound scientific research - that liberal bias in the media does exist and undermines traditional American values, but also to neutralize its impact on the American political scene. What they launched that fall is the now acclaimed --- Media Research Center (MRC)."[4]

The liberal media watch group Media Matters for America has also repeatedly criticized the MRC, charging that they view the media "through a funhouse mirror that renders everything--even the facts themselves--as manifestations of insidious bias." [5]

Following the publication of a Bloomberg Businessweek article examining and criticizing the American Legislative Exchange Council, (ALEC), MRC immediately came to ALEC's defense. MRC's Iris Somberg accused the authors of the article of accepting "the liberal mantra that corporations are evil and buy support through shadowy groups" and asserted that the article "is thick with one-sided caricatures of conservative policies could have easily been written by a left-wing blogger." [6]

But rather than criticizing the Businessweek article on the merits, or countering the claims that its author's make, MRC's Somberg sets up a convoluted ad hominem. Somberg writes that groups cited in the article had received funding from the Open Society Foundations of George Soros, but does not actually dispute any thing those groups say.
BOY – Will that sound familiar in just a minute!!!!

The MRC article condescendingly states that the Businessweek authors say that ALEC receives funding from Exxon Mobil ("Nothing says evil like Big Oil cash," Somberg writes), perhaps to set up some sort of false equivalency with other groups indirectly receiving Soros money. But Exxon Mobil is only one of many corporations mentioned in the Businessweek article that fund ALEC.

FUNNY – Cause Exxon is a big funder of MRC.  Interesting how they would pick that particular time!!!

MRC does not mention that ALEC is led by lobbyists, and gets 98% of its funding from corporate interests. The problem with ALEC's corporate funding is not just with the funding per se, but with the fact that those dollars are being used to influence elected officials, and to push laws that govern the lives of all Americans designed to benefit the corporate bottom line.
DUH!!!! No one talks about this part.

And    I have found when talking with others that they don’t see much wrong with this.  UNTIL you tell them that corporations provide more than 90% of the legislation that is introduced at ALEC meetings.  Then you have to stress the fact that they not only introduce the legislation – but it is legislation that the corporations have written – then people start to listen.

And what does MRC have to say about Moyers documentary????
Here's where the right wing whining starts.
PBS’s Moyers Gives Over $1.3 million to 4 of 6 Groups Attacking Conservative ALEC
Whoopee!!!
This definitely has more impact – 1/3 million – whoopee
How about these right wing headlines???????
Sheldon Adelson Willing to Spend $100 Million to Beat Obama
Will the $500 million pledged from the Koch brothers and other American oligarchs be enough to defeat Obama in 2012?
Get real – right wingers – get real!!!!!!

Few in journalism are viewed with as much veneration and respect as media veteran Bill Moyers.

Those accolades ignore the reality that Moyers is involved in a massive conflict of interest. As a journalist Moyers reported repeatedly on attacks by liberal groups against the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). But his reporting failed to note he has helped fund four of the six organizations involved in the attack. Moyers has also criticized conservative groups and the Tea Party time and again, while he promoted liberal causes.
Now – I watch a lot of Moyers and yes he is a voice for DEMOCRACY – not necessarily democrats.  Moyers focus is his concern about what is happening to our DMEOCRACY – something the right wingers are hoping that the majority of people in the Untied States are not paying too much attention to.

Moyers heads the Schumann Center for Media and Democracy, which has given away $1,360,000 to groups leading the attack on ALEC. That point was ignored in four stories written about ALEC on Moyers’ website in 2012, even though Moyers has been criticized for his connections in the past. Similarly, billionaire George Soros also donated more than $12 million to those same organizations.
Who the hell cares!!!!!
Doesn’t the right-wing get it that right-wing money bags are contributing more to the destruction of the United States than any liberal or democratic funding.

C’mon you right-wing whining hypocrites!  Last time I heard right wing PACS were overspending the left wing by about 10 to 1 million dollars trying to buy this election.  What Moyer is possibly contributing – which I question in thei article – is by far MINISCULE to what the right wing money bags are dishing out to steal this election and destroy the US democracy.

The campaign against ALEC, dubbed “ALEC Exposed,” managed to pressure several of ALEC’s donors to pull their funding from the group, including Kraft, McDonalds, PepsiCo and Coca-Cola. On Sept. 14, pharmaceutical giant Merck was the latest to withdraw.
Whine – whine, whine.
Give me a glass of pinot noir – so I can share your pain – a$$holes.

One, fairly recent, example of Moyers’s hypocrisy was his coverage of the attacks against the ALEC. ALEC, a non-profit organization that promotes state-based policy initiatives, has been heavily criticized by the left for its politically conservative stance on many issues.
Oh, poor ALEC –
ALEC can’t come out from behing the curtains to defend themselves so they have to send Koch and SCaife funded MRC to do their work for them.
What a bunch of damn wimps!!

In March 2012, a group of lefty organizations including the Schumann Center for Media and Democracy, the Center for Media and Democracy (which are not the same group, despite the similarities in name), the Center for American Progress, People for the American Way, United Republic, Common Cause and Color of Change, launched a campaign to pressure the corporations that funded ALEC to withdraw their support.
Whine – whine, whine.
Give me a glass of pinot noir – so I can share your pain – a$$holes.

And then the right wing media goes to the only lefty they love to bash!  Soros
The same four organizations that received funds from Moyers have also received money from Soros’s Open Society Foundation since 2000, totaling, $12,338,491:

•Center for American Progress ($5,784,991)
•People for the American Way ($4,200,000)
•Common Cause ($2,153,500)
•Center for Media and Democracy ($200,000)
The Open Society foundation also gave $300,000 to Color of Change in 2010.
You would think the right-wing nut jobs could find a more current and salient gripe to have.
Whoopee!!!! The dems have Soros – OMG!!!! Whooppee!!!

And then they throw the final inevitable right wing bullet  ..
Before he was a renowned journalist, Bill Moyers, now 78, was involved in liberal politics. He served in the Kennedy administration as the associate director for public affairs for the Peace Corps, and then later in the Johnson administration as Johnson’s press secretary. Moyers spoke highly of LBJ, and has pointed to him as an example of how a president should handle Medicare. Moyers hosted Bill Moyers Journal on PBS from 1971 through 1981 with a brief hiatus from 1976-1977. He also worked as an analyst and commentator on both CBS and NBC.
Oh, my god!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

The right wing media never – never ceases to amaze me.

They think that their fascist leaders are the end all – be all gods to the world.  They can’t stand it when someone takes a stand against the fascism known as the American Legislative Exchange Council.

Can someone please tell me what ALEC is paying their big buck PR firm for – because it’s evident that they are still relying on raunchy right wing media to try and save ALEC’s a$$.

Metcalfe (PA-ALEC) A REal Piece of NASTY

Today – Daryl Metcalfe of PA – made the news again – from the Nation:
METCALFE: I don’t believe any legitimate voter that actually wants to exercise that right and takes on the according responsibility that goes with that right to secure their photo ID will be disenfranchised. As Mitt Romney said, 47% of the people that are living off the public dole, living off their neighbors’ hard work, and we have a lot of people out there that are too lazy to get up and get out there and get the ID they need. If individuals are too lazy, the state can’t fix that.

Couldn’t stop but think what a nasty ALEC member this guy is – he is right up there with Russell Pearce of AZ (of SB1070 fame)  – in fact Daryl and Pearce are really good buddies.

Attacking the Constitution: State Legislators for Legal Immigration & the Anti-Immigrant Movement.Sections
Gay people are the "death knell" of America. The Confederacy fought for "individual liberties." One-world government, as predicted in the Book of Revelation, is around the corner. The federal government knew about the Oklahoma City bombing before it happened. President Obama is a secret Muslim and not an American citizen. The babies of undocumented immigrants are a "poison." State troopers should confine immigrants to special ghettoes. A federal agency has secretly built a series of concentration camps for patriotic Americans.

These are just some of the radical-right beliefs of a dozen leading members of State Legislators for Legal Immigration (SLLI), a four-year-old organization that specializes in mounting legislative attacks on immigrants in states around the country. SLLI is now working feverishly to end the 14th Amendment's promise of birthright citizenship. Passed in the aftermath of the Civil War, the amendment guarantees that all persons born in this country and subject to its jurisdiction are citizens of the United States as well as the state in which they live.

And there is more
State Legislators for Legal Immigration is a coalition of anti-immigrant state-elected officials. As a partner of the John Tanton Network, a web of controversial anti-immigrant organizations orchestrated by John Tanton, State Legislators for Legal Immigration (SLLI) was founded as a front group by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) in 2007.

FAIR and John Tanton (a Petoskey, Michigan-based retired ophthalmologist) have a long history of working with and financially supporting far-right extremist groups and individuals with virulent anti-immigration agendas and ties to white nationalism. Despite its claims to represent the “mainstream” of the American anti-immigrant movement, FAIR’s history is far from benign.

In 1997, Tanton solicited and received $1.2 million from the white supremacist Pioneer Fund to build his anti-immigrant powerhouse, FAIR. The Pioneer Fund was founded to promote the pseudo-science called eugenics, which purports to show that African Americans are mentally inferior to whites because of their genetic makeup.

SLLI works hand-in-hand with the John Tanton Network to distort the issue of immigration and undermine America’s values of equality and liberty.

FAIR’s legal arm, Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI), supplies “model” legislation for members of SLLI and has developed an “online model legislation clearing house” for state legislators. In a press statement, Pennsylvania state representative Daryl Metcalfe, the founder of SLLI, also acknowledged its "working partnership with the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI)."

Remember, Daryl Metcalfe – is an ALEC member.

And in 2010 and 2011 Daryl Metcalfe – was a member of the now defunct Elections and Public Safety Task Force.  The task force that brought us Voter ID, Kill at Will and SB1070.  ALEC has said they disbanded this task force – but the next day the chair of this task force said they just moved the duties and “model” legislation to different task forces – an ALEC slight of hand.

Metcalfe encourages state legislators to intervene in immigration issues, although Constitutional scholars have, for many years, said that immigration enforcement falls exclusively within the domain of the federal government.

And what better place to be able to do this - than an ALEC meeting.

And Tanton is still at it – but like ALEC covertly

After a front page Sunday New York Times expose investigating John Tanton’s racist ties and statements appeared in April of this year, Tanton quietly disappeared from FAIR’s board. When this came to light, FAIR claimed that Tanton had decided to leave the board in February, but the organization neglected to mention this little fact to Jason DeParle, the author of the expose. Tanton’s affiliation with the group he founded didn’t stray for too long, though. A few months after his name disappeared from FAIR’s board, he appeared on FAIR’s advisory board where he remains at the time of writing.

And Metcalfe is a focused little buttwipe.
In January SLLI stated their intent
State Lawmakers Convened in D.C. to Deliver Historic, Nationwide Correction to the 14th Amendment Misapplication
1/5/2011
Pennsylvania State Representative and State Legislators for Legal Immigration (SLLI) founder Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler County), state lawmakers and Constitutional scholars from across the nation convened in Washington D.C. today to unveil historic model legislation to correct the monumental misapplication of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. This historic press conference was held on the same day as the swearing-in of the 112th Congress; encouraging that one of the first actions should be to uphold their oath and defend the Constitution to protect the states from the illegal alien invasion.

“According to the 14th Amendment, the primary requirements for U.S. citizenship are dependent on total allegiance to America, not mere physical geography,” said Metcalfe. “The purpose of this model legislation is to restore the original intent of the 14th Amendment, which is currently being misapplied and is encouraging illegal aliens to cross and cost American taxpayers $113 billion annually, or nearly $1,117 yearly per individual taxpayer.”

Currently, hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens are crossing U.S. borders to give birth and exploit their child as an “anchor baby,” as a means to obtain residency, access taxpayer-funded benefits and steal American jobs for themselves and for their families.

In a news release from Friday, June 29th, Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, the founder of the Tanton Network’s State Legislators for Legal Immigration, was quoted as having said:
“There are no innocent illegal aliens because their very first step across the border is a criminal violation of federal immigration law. After that they must break law after law in order to survive, including, but certainly not limited to, committing welfare fraud and stealing jobs from taxpaying Pennsylvania citizens. Since the federal government remains AWOL in fulfilling its constitutional obligation to defend the states against foreign invasion, Pennsylvania state lawmakers have no choice but to stand together to advance the National Security Begins at Home package [...which] will serve as a significant economic deterrent to Pennsylvania’s illegal alien invasion.”

Harsh words, indeed, but Metcalfe has long been a bigoted fire-brand of the anti-immigrant far-right, one who never seems to shy from controversy. From underhanded uses of taxpayer money to a sprawling bigotry that includes constant derision of gays, Muslims and Latinos, Metcalfe has repeatedly proven himself not as a representative of the Pennsylvania people, but a relentless ideologue advancing a contentious agenda.

BUT – the scary part for all of us is:
May 16, 2012 9:30 am ET by Simon Maloy

On January 5, 2011, at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, a group called State Legislators for Legal Immigration held a press event announcing their intention to change meaning of the citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment, which has granted citizenship to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof" ever since it was ratified in 1868. The group wants to force a reinterpretation of the amendment to prevent children of undocumented immigrants from obtaining citizenship, thus removing (in SLLI's view) an incentive for people to cross the border illegally.

Their primary weapon in this crusade is a model bill that says children must have at least one parent who is a U.S. citizen (or resident alien) in order to be eligible for state citizenship.

Could you prove your ALL your ancestors came into this country legally?
Can you prove your grandparents were legal citizens?
Can you prove your great grandparents came into the US legally?.
If you cannot prove it - your entire family would be illegal immigrants, if this group gets their way.
CAN YOU PROVE IT?

Pennsylvania
Do you really want someone like this representing your beautiful state.
Someone so filled with hate and disgust for the rest of us?

PLEASE Do not re-elect this guy.
