Self-induced Stupidity Isn't an Acceptable Excuse

This morning when I was listening to MPR they said that Tammy Baldwin was down by nine points to Tommy Thompson in the Wisconsin Senate race.

Reason:  30% of polled voters don’t know enough about Baldwin.

Ignorance is not an appropriate excuse.

Maybe it’s time for the pollsters to start asking people – why don’t you know?

Every person that answered that way has chosen to be ignorant, ill-informed and just plain – damn stupid.

This report infuriated me initially – because I know about Tommy Thompson and his leadership roles in the American Legislative Exchange Council.

·        It is people like Tommy Thompson that brought people like Scott Walker into the political limelight.

·        It is people like Tommy Thompson that brought destruction of our representative government to the American people through their leadership in ALEC and the ALEC mantra of limited government.

·        It is people like Tommy Thompson – who cut and paste corporate written legislation and bring it back to their states “as my own” – that has led to Citizens United.

·        It is people like Tommy Thompson who have re-written our state lobbying policies and laws to exempt ALEC from reporting

·        It is people like Tommy Thompson that brought about racist voting policies into our United States through their leadership roles in ALEC.

·        It is people like Tommy Thompson – who have vilified the lower and middle classes so that the 1% could grow and prosper for the past 40 years.

·        It is politicians like Tommy Thompson – that have brought our country to this divisive precipice.

·        It is politicians like Tommy Thompson that have destroyed our political process over the last 40 years.

·        It is politicians like Tommy Thompson – politicians who have aligned themselves with ALEC and the Koch brothers – that have destroyed our government of, by and for the people; replacing it with a government of, by, and for the corporations.

·        It is politicians like Tommy Thompson that have brought us to where we are today – and they will continue on this destructive path in the future – why would people even consider choosing that?

·        It is politicians like Tommy Thompson that have destroyed the rights of the people while expanding the rights of corporations.

Maybe – it is because those 30% of people do not know about ALEC and do not know about Tommy Thompson leadership role in ALEC.

And yet – 30% of the people surveyed do not know Tammy Baldwin.

This should be about – what they know about Thompson.

And yet after all that – I am still incensed that 30% of people admit their ignorance.

And this is not unique to Wisconsin.

     Wisconsin is a Microcosm of politics in America

     I read that somewhere recently.

I am NOT ready to accept  - I REFUSE to accept
     that what happened in Wisconsin is what our country should be willing to accept.

I reject what happened in Wisconsin this past year and ahalf.

I blame what happened in Wisconsin on politicians and lobbyists like Tommy Thompson.

I do not want what happened in Wisconsin to be a model for the United States.

I do not want any more Tommy Thompson  ALEC-ers, extremist right-wing conservatives in our Federal government.

And yet – 30% of the people surveyed do not know Tammy Baldwin.
Do I have any type of empathy for these ignorant people – hell no! 

They have a phone – they answered the phone – they took the pollsters questions.

If they have time to answer the phone and take a poll – they have time to educate themselves on the candidates that are running in their state – regardless of what state it is.
If you can talk on the phone with a pollster - you have the mental faculties needed to find out about the candidates.

And yet – 30% of the people surveyed do not know Tammy Baldwin.

Ignorance is not an appropriate excuse.

Every person that answered that way has chosen to be ignorant, ill-informed and just plain – damn stupid.

Self-induced stupidity is not an excuse.

Maybe – it is because those 30% of the people do not care about democracy.

Maybe – it is because those 30% of the people do not care about our country.

An educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival as a free people."

Proudly proclaiming your ignorance and stupidity to a pollster

   should not be an appropriate answer.

It should be an embarrassment.

You should feel shameful.

You should feel guilty for not fully participating in the greatest gift that our country has given you – the right to vote.

If you can’t educate yourself on the candidates –

If you are too damn busy with your everyday life to find out about the candidates
If you are too damn busy to fully participate in our democratic process by fully educating yoruself

           Then, please stay the hell away from the voting booth.

Tommy Thompson must not be re-elected!

He is ALEC – always has been and probably still is.

Tommy Thompson is an extremist right wing conservative and he must not be re-elected.

to put another ALEC leader into the US Congress and 

if we don’t act now – we only have ourselves to blame.
