Five Days Before Latest College Shooting, TX Legislator Introduced ALEC/NRA Bill to Allow Guns on Campus

Just days before three people were shot in an altercation on a college campus in Texas, fourteen Texas state Senators co-sponsored a National Rifle Association-backed bill to prohibit colleges from restricting concealed handguns on campuses. The legislation closely resembles a "model" adopted by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

Students gathered Tuesday after the shooting at the North Harris campus of Lone Star College, on the outskirts of Houston. (Jason Fochtman/The Courier of Montgomery County, via Associated Press) On January 22, an altercation at the Lone Star College campus in Houston led to gunfire. According to initial reports, one man involved in the fight was shot, and two bystanders were caught in the crossfire. Both suspects have been apprehended; one of the men had a student identification card.

A year ago - almost exactly, I wrote the post below - Guns in Dorms - and I stand by it a year later.
REMEMBER - ALEC has been distributing this legislation to their members for over a year!!!
When is this going to stop.
When are we going to stop ALEC and the NRA.
When are YOU going to say NO MORE to your ALEC legislators?

Your ALEC legislator wastes your time and money
at ALEC meetings  writing stupid legislation - that makes no damn sense.

I worked in higher ed for over 14 years - I have seen a lot of stuff and this piece of stupid, unneeded, waste of time  ALEC legislation really really pisses me off
- strong language ahead.

I personally want to bitch slap every single person who worked on this legislation - in person - up close and personal.
How dare ALEC put the needs and wants of ALEC member the NRA above the safety of our students, staff and faculty.

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) - writing stupid a$$ legislation that neither you nor I wants - and wasting the precious time of our legislators and wasting precious tax payer dollars.
ALEC HAS TO GO!  WE MUST DESTROY ALEC!  They are wasting the time and taxpayer dollars of the American people.

Well - here's another piece of ALEC stupid legislation
that YOUR legislator spent time talking about and voting about and going to meetings about
AND  will probably bring it into your state legislature and trying to implement it - ALL FOR THE NRA.

Can someone please tell me
- why in the hell do ALEC members think they have to write stupid unneeded legislation like this one.
- why in the hell do we allow our legislators - both state and federal to be associated with a stupid damn organization like ALEC.

I'm sorry - this legislation is so f#cking wrong and stupid - I can not believe that ALEC legislative members took the time to write it - to debate it and to approve it!!!!
There is something mentally wrong with people who would write, review and approve legislation like this. 
What in the hell is wrong with ALEC members?  We have to get them OUT OF OFFICE!
 - We have to stop funding them to go to ALEC meetings.
 - We have to STOP paying and reimbursing them for their dues.
 - We have to STOP them from going to ALEC meetings on state time.
ALEC and ALEC membership and ALEC meetings are a waste of taxpayer money!

ALEC is a waste of time -
YOUR legislator attending ALEC functions is a waste of taxpayer time and money.

The majority of the legislation written by ALEC is - a waste of time.
     BUT -
     ALEC corporate /private sector/ and trade associations members
     are so god damn happy
     because they get to write legislation - without ever having to be elected.
     AND they pay a lot of money to be able to write legislation.

This IS NOT what we want our legislators doing.
We have to stand up and say NO! to ALEC membership and everything and anything related to ALEC.

Campus Personal Protection Act 

 

Summary 

This Act amends state criminal codes and concealed carry laws to remove prohibitions on  the possession or carrying of handguns on the campuses of postsecondary educational  institutions by individuals issued valid licenses to carry concealed handguns. Also limits  the application of rules and regulations established by governing boards of postsecondary  educational institutions on the possession of firearms on campuses by individuals issued  valid licenses to carry concealed handguns. 

Model Legislation 

Section 1. (if necessary) Repeal or amend appropriate section of Penal Code or  Criminal Code of [insert state name] prohibiting the possession of firearms on school  grounds to allow persons issued valid concealed handgun permits recognized by the  State of [insert name] to lawfully transport and carry a concealed handgun on a college,  university or postsecondary vocational-technical school campus in this state. 

Section 2. (if necessary) Repeal or amend appropriate section of Concealed  Handgun Act of [insert state name] prohibiting the carrying of handguns by permit  holders on school grounds to allow persons issued valid concealed handgun permits  recognized by the State of [insert name] to lawfully transport and carry a concealed  handgun on a college, university or postsecondary vocational-technical school campus in  this state. 

Section 3. No governing body of a college or university or postsecondary vocationa/technical  school shall have the authority to establish rules or regulations limiting or  abridging the ability of a person issued a valid concealed handgun permit recognized by  this state to lawfully carry a concealed handgun on its campus. However, governing  bodies of educational institutions may establish rules or regulations relating to the storage  of firearms in campus dormitories.

How dare ALEC write "legislation" that potentially puts faculty, students, and staff at risk - who in the hell do they think they are?  ALEC has to go - We MUST Destroy ALEC.

ALEC member - NRA wins - Campus community gets screwed!

"Versions of the legislation were introduced in Texas in 2009 and 2011 but failed to pass."

This is not new ALEC Legislation!
This is legislation that originated when the NRA was the private sector chair of the ALEC "Public Safety" Task Force - What a crock - "Public Safety"!!!

America - when in the hell are you going to wake up and step up and stop this ALEC insanity!!!
