MI Did Not Add Conceal/Carry into Classrooms

Yes, even I make mistakes.

Every once in awhile even I have to go back and re-look at something I posted

Sometimes I post things without researching them assuming that the source I got it from was correct.  Most of the time they are.  This time it was wrong.

When the right-wing starts using something I posted as a meme.

I KNEW WHAT I POSTED HAS to BE WRONG - OR WAS A RIGHT WING TALKING POINT MEANT TO MISLEAD..

I realized that while watching TV and surfing the web.

BUT – it is interesting that no one is retracting their stories on this.

Why?

Because it serves the right-wing gun loving meme.

This morning when I was watching our right-wing TV station in Minneapolis argue with Keith Ellison about gun control measures I again heard the right wing meme that I have seen reported in multiple right wing sites over the past couple of days.

This is not a direct quote but it will get the point across

Right-Wing Reporter:

You have to admit Representative Ellison that the American public are not in favor of gun control as evidenced by the fact that Michigan just passed a law allowing guns in the schools.

The fact that the right wingers are using the Friday passage of Michigan bill 

as a justification for American support of guns in the classroom, today

- is patently FALSE.

What happened in Michigan on Friday does not reflect TODAY - it reflects yesteryear.

The law allowing guns into the classroom was already on the books.

BRIEF SUMMARY: Generally speaking, the bill would amend the Handgun Licensure Act (1927 PA 372) to:

What Michigan did this past week was to amend the Handgun Licensure Act..

AND

They did not add conceal and carry into the classroom.

It was already in the Handgun Licensure Act on the books in Michigan.

What the Michigan legislature did was an amendment that changed provisions in a bill that already included being able to carry handguns into schools.

If you look at the bill – as passed – you will see the revisions and also see this exception paragraph that states:

     Sec. 5o. (1) Subject to subsection (5), an individual licensed

under this act to carry a concealed pistol, or who is exempt from

licensure under section 12a(1)(f), 12a(1)(h), shall not carry a

concealed pistol on the premises of any of the following:

     (a) A school or school property except that a parent or legal

guardian of a student of the school is not precluded from carrying

a concealed pistol while in a vehicle on school property, if he or

she is dropping the student off at the school or picking up the

child from the school. As used in this section, "school" and

"school property" mean those terms as defined in section 237a of

the Michigan penal code, 1931 PA 328, MCL 750.237a.

IS ORIGINAL to the Handgun Licensure Act

Michiganders - this was already a law in your state - before Friday.

The revisions to the AMENDED bill are in red and BOLD.

The Michigan legislature did not add this – it was already there – the section is not bolded.

They did not add conceal and carry into the classroom.

It was already in the original bill on the books in Michigan.

The right-wing lie that Michigan passed conceal and carry on Friday 

 as a show of support by the American public for gun rights is a LIE.

WHICH

Should signal to all Americans

that you need to check your laws in your state

– cause you also may have

– a conceal and carry into classrooms that you don’t know about.

BUT – it is interesting that no one is retracting their stories on this.
