Yesterday when I was listening to the Ed Schultz show I heard a phrase used on his show, which I believe was: “vaginal manager” (or something VERY similar) when he was talking about the role that the Repugs are taking in relation to women and women’s health. And yes, in the recesses of my mind I do hold Ed Schultz responsible for promulgation of misogyny, because it occurred on his show.
I have written previously on the blog about my horror about the direction that the Republican discourse is taking in regards to women’s reproductive systems.
The fact that someone would even use a phrase like “vaginal MANager” is even scarier than I could ever imagine and regressive in terms of how women are viewed in society. It doesn’t matter if the phrase is used in a sarcastic manner – what is important is that the phrase has even evolved into a talking point.
In the US Congress only 16% of the seats are held by women and in the US overall only 20% of elected officials are women – which leads to a very distressing connotation for the phrase “vaginal MANager”.
Vocabulary and talking points say a lot about what is happening in society and what I see happening has a very disturbing undertone to it. The fact that MANagement of a women’s reproductive system is required by someone other than the woman who owns that reproductive system – is misogynist in it’s very underpinnings.
This misogynyst dialogue was been re-started by the Republicans. This misogynyst dialgue continues among Republicans. This misogynyst message is a platform and philosophy of the new ultra-conservative, paternalistic, Republican Party.
Basically what you have is an adult state of affairs which is seen by the Republicans in their normal paternalistic viewpoint. While the woman is responsible for caring for her own body, she has no control over that for which she is responsible. Paternalistic – misogynist.
“Vaginal MANagement” – degradation of womankind, degradation of a woman’s spirit – degradation of humankind.
I am a frequent attendee and supporter of V-Day and the Vagina Monologues. I have heard the stories of the how “Vaginal MANagement” really works across the world. I had hoped that by the telling of these stories, that humankind could move beyond the limiting scope of paternalistic, misogyny.
V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM), and sex slavery.
In 2011, over 5,800 V-Day benefit events took place produced by volunteer activists in theand around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls. U.S.
The 'V' in V-Day stands for Victory, Valentine and Vagina
“Vaginal MANagement” is paternalistic.
“Vaginal MANagement” is misogynist.
“Vaginal MANagement” the slippery slope (every possible pun intended)
to increased incidents of
rape,
battery,
incest,
female genital mutilation (FGM),
sex slavery,
and femicide.
