ALEC Revenue Stream Trumps Cancer Risks

You just can’t make up this crap – when it comes to ALEC.
They just never cease to amaze.
How many of your state legislators are ALEC members?  How many of them are going to Salt Lake City July 25 – 27 to pick up more ALEC “model” legislation?

At the group’s meeting in Charlotte, N.C., in May, for example, Niederhauser offered a resolution adopted by ALEC and backed by tobacco companies urging states to enact tax laws pushing cigarette smokers to use smokeless tobacco because it is less harmful.

"Cigarette companies were coming out and supporting the resolution and saying cigarettes are harmful to your health. I thought that was a huge step for them," Niederhauser said. "They see they’ve lost the battle on cigarette smoking and … they’re saying, ‘Yeah, if we have these other products, we need to look at them and see what the risks really are.’ "

See what the risks - really are??????
Like with cigarettes??????
Really - we still need to figure out what the risks are?????
Really?????

How effing dumb is this Utah legislator
- he's been drinking too many ALEC cocktails at the meetings and
going to too many ALEC cigar receptions at the ALEC annual meetings.

And then you have this yesterday from the UK Guardian
Alec also persuaded politicians from around the world to back a trade resolution attacking the European Union ban on snus, a moist smokeless tobacco product that comes in fruit flavours and is targeted at younger consumers.

It appears that the only thing that the American Legislative Exchange Council is in business for - is to protect the revenues of ALEC Corporate Profit Sector Members.

For that fool from Utah
- the mentally challenged legislator quoted at the beginning of this entry
here's excerpts from a report from 2002
UF tobacco expert: Study exposes dangers of snuff for smokers wanting to quit
As tobacco companies campaign to promote smokeless tobacco as a safer alternative to cigarettes, many smokers who take up snuff in an effort to quit instead end up using both products, warns a University of Florida researcher. Furthermore, nonsmokers who use snuff are more likely than those who don’t to eventually begin smoking.

“Men were more than 2.5 times as likely to have switched from snuff to cigarettes than to have switched from cigarettes to snuff,” said Scott Tomar, D.M.D., Dr.P.H., a professor of public health services and research at UF’s College of Dentistry who tracked snuff and cigarette use among more than 14,000 U.S. men. Tomar’s study appears in the current issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Tomar assessed data gathered from the 1998 National Health Interview Survey, which is conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and updated approximately every four years.

“Snuff may be a gateway form of nicotine dosing among U.S. males that may lead to subsequent cigarette use,” added Tomar, also a member of the UF Shands Cancer Center. “More than 40 percent of men who had been snuff users continued or started smoking.”

Snuff is finely milled tobacco that rapidly delivers high doses of nicotine to the bloodstream. Users commonly place a pinch of snuff between their front teeth and lower lip.

His findings also support former U.S. Surgeon General’s C. Everett Koop’s 1986 warning that the use of smokeless tobacco “is not a safe substitute for smoking cigarettes …and can lead to nicotine addiction and dependence.” The National Cancer Institute, meanwhile, has identified 28 known carcinogens in snuff.

Numerous studies indicate snuff and smokeless tobacco users also increase their risk of cancers of the larynx and esophagus. In addition, oral cancer can include tumors of the lip, tongue, cheeks and gums. Smokeless tobacco also has been linked to gum disease, bone loss in the jaw, tooth decay, tooth loss, chronic bad breath, high blood pressure and increased risk of heart disease, among other problems.

The article closes with this statement:
“The primary interest of (tobacco) companies is not the health of the country,” he added. “Their ultimate goal is to maximize profits.”

Which brings me back to this statement:
It appears that the only thing that the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is in business for - is to protect the revenues (maximize profits) of ALEC Corporate Profit Sector Members.

In an ALEC  letter to ALEC Alum Scott Walker – ALEC noted this

For these reasons, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) supports the policy in WI AB 40’s amendment regarding the excise tax on moist smokeless tobacco.

Snip

ALEC has passed a model resolution and statement of principles on this issue which is attached to the resolution, Resolution on the Enhancement of Economic Neutrality, Commercial Efficiency, and Fairness in the Taxation of Moist Smokeless Tobacco Products.

But then we really need to remember this - - -
Numerous studies indicate snuff and smokeless tobacco users also increase their risk of cancers of the larynx and esophagus. In addition, oral cancer can include tumors of the lip, tongue, cheeks and gums. Smokeless tobacco also has been linked to gum disease, bone loss in the jaw, tooth decay, tooth loss, chronic bad breath, high blood pressure and increased risk of heart disease, among other problems.
and this

"Cigarette companies were coming out and supporting the resolution and saying cigarettes are harmful to your health. I thought that was a huge step for them," Niederhauser said. "They see they’ve lost the battle on cigarette smoking and … they’re saying, ‘Yeah, if we have these other products, we need to look at them and see what the risks really are.’ "

Which brings me back again to this
It appears that the only thing that the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is in business for - is to protect the revenues of ALEC Corporate Profit Sector Members.

– Why in the hell does ALEC have to get involved in this?
– Oh, yeah - to protect ALEC's revenue stream from their Corporate Profit Sector donors
