College Republicans Question GOPs Relevancy to Them

There's a couple of article reported this weekend that doesn't paint a particularly good picture for the GOP when it comes to the longevity of the party - as it now stands/reacts. 

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Sunday

"I would say we're not closed for repairs, but open for repairs," he said. "That's the Republican party that needs to grow, that needs to win presidential elections, and needs to be a year-round permanent operation, which is what we're built on."

But it is important to note that it appears that Prince Riebuss is out of touch not only with getting the message to his GOP members - but also when getting the GOP message out to the younger folks.

To start you have this article where Rep. Messer (R-IN) wants college students to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and pay for college without help or lower interest rates

Rep. Luke Messer (R-IN) believes young people should assume responsibility for their student loans and support the GOP's student loan bill.

When "Daily Rundown" host Luke Russert asked [Rep. Luke ] Messer [(R-IN) ]how he would reconcile the fact that Republicans are in favor of letting student loan rates rise up to 8.5 percent while it appears the president wants to keep rates between 3 and 4 percent, Messer said the GOP has a communication problem.

“Republicans have to do a better job of explaining how our ideas apply to young people," Messer said. "Sometimes it sounds like he is selling ice cream and we’re selling spinach. I think personal responsibility is pretty cool. There is nothing out of date about freedom, and we have the policies that get this budget back in line, stop the explosive growth of spending. Spending that will be paid for by this generation. We’ve got to do a better job of explaining that.”

He wants college students to "support the GOP's student loan bill" as noted above - wishful thinking on his part and the part of the GOP.

The College Republican National Committee – evidently believes that the GOP needs to be CLOSED for repairs if they expect to get the support of the college generation.

A titillating headline at HuffPo for a Politico article about a report just complete by The College Republican National Committee on the current GOP is entitled:

'CLOSED-MINDED, RACIST, RIGID, OLD-FASHIONED'

Not exactly what you want to see in the headlines – when you are the GOP trying to fend of the title of the old white guys party.

When you go to Politico to read the article – you find that the College Republican National Committee report does not necessarily agree with Messer’s views – in fact the College Republican National Committee concludes “Democrats are perceived as taking more action” in regards to student loans. 

AND the College Republican National Committee report notes doesn’t necessarily agree with Messers “‘fend for yourself’” policies.

AND the College Republican National Committee report notes that “people who didn’t view the Republican Party favorably”.

Not exactly what you want to hear – when you are the GOP trying to fend of the title of the old white guys party. 

The College Republican National Committee on Monday will make public a detailed report — the result of extensive polling and focus groups — dissecting what went wrong for Republicans with young voters in the 2012 elections and how the party can improve its showing with that key demographic in the future.

It’s not a pretty picture. In fact, it’s a “dismal present situation,” the report says

To combat that, the report stressed that the GOP should better explain how its policies translate into economic growth for the country and for individuals. On an issue that hits especially close to home for young voters — student loans — Democrats are perceived as taking more action.

 “‘I think they’re more in tune to what we need right now with student loans, getting a job, fixing the housing market and the environment,’ observed one focus group participant from Orlando, Fla., with another adding that he had ‘heard Obama once say, Oh, he has student loans, he went to school, he knows what we’re going through,’” the report said, calling on the GOP to outline ways to make college more affordable.

“If we don’t believe that Republicans are the ‘fend for yourself’ party, then it’s time for us to explain why — and to show our work,” the report said. “This will go a long way overall, but particularly with Latino voters, who tend to think the GOP couldn’t care less about them.”

The college Republicans warned that the party’s primary message of cutting taxes and reducing the size of government failed to resonate.

“We found that there were misconceptions and common ways of thinking among people who didn’t view the Republican Party favorably that were simply not in accord with where the party actually stands,” Smith told POLITICO.

OOPS.

The younger generation speaks.

They produced a report - based on facts and data - much like a Dem would do - so this will not be well-received at the GOP headquarters.

They definitely are putting forth a message that the GOP is broken for them and Prince Riebuss' noting that the GOP is "open for repairs" - probably won't include the viewpoints of the College Republican National Committee.

I kinda expect the GOP response to be - shut up and don't question your elders - we know better.  Could be the next GOP area of contempt - the War on College Students.

It appears that the old white guy GOP party line isn't resonating much with the needs of the generation that will eventually take over the party.

When this report is published today - I guess I'd be very, very scared - if I was a Grover Norquist kissing, ALEC loving, old white guy RepubliCON.
